Wednesday @ The Lord Ashley Stanhope Road,
South Shields.
URGENT NOTICES
October 2010 : Settled nicely at the Lord Ashley for the winter....
The idea of the Tradition Club is to give traditional musicians (and instrument makers) in and around South Shields a place where they can get together to play and chat.
We are based upstairs in The Lord Ashley pub, Stanhope Rd, South Shields. The evening starts at around 8.30pm.
Check out the Sets to see some of the tunes we play. It usually tends to be a healthy mix of music from all of our regional traditions, plus the odd foray over the North Sea into various European traditions. Instruments played depend on who turns up, but we've had everything from flutes and whistles, fiddles, concertinas, mandolins, bouzoukis, guitars, uilleann and northumbrian pipes to armenian duduk. We even allowed a bodhran player once!
If you are a traditional musician living in the area and want to become involved you can register your details using the form here. You can also email us at tradition@blueyonder.co.uk, or telephone on 07891 167602.
The club will sometimes move to accomodate other bookings, so please telephone or email before you come.
Announcements
Updated Tuesday 5th Oct
- A fair few new tunes in the sets section, some penned by our very own Tony Black & Iain Gelston, with recordings where available. Make of them what you will. Tony's The Raven & Around the Twist are particularly good jigs.
- Hoping to get our hands on a repaired Zoom multitrack soon so we can put up some recordings of the sessions.
Updated Wednesday 16th June
- We are off for a few weeks for various reasons, mainly due to holidays etc. We will hopefully be back on at the pub towards the end of June. In the meantime, those of us who aren't away may be holding house sessions on the Wednesday nights, so if you want to play some music please telephone or email.
- Meanwhile, more tunes & sets added all of the time. Some of the current batch are groups of tunes commonly used for ceilidh dancing, plus some tunes from Lancaster musician Andy Hornby.
Updated Monday 23rd Nov
- Ed has fixed the recording upload feature from down under (the wonders of the interweb!) so Tony has been adding a few tunes - particularly Frederic Paris' beautiful 'Le Canal en Octobre'. Also added are a few French and Northumbrian sets, and a transcription from Dinny Delaneys Irish Piping recording in 1900 I think, of Repeal the Union. You can download the original recording at Ross's Music Page, but if you want a version without the hiss and crackle try Harry Bradley's 'Night Rambler's Companion' cd.
Updated Wednesday 18th March
- New set of slip jigs added, taken from the playing of piper Liam O'Flynn - The First Slip/Hardiman the Fiddler #1 & 2/The Yellow Wattle. The last is a good piping double jig.
- The Mason's Apron/Miss McLeod(or Mrs McLeod)- new reels added.
- Archived Recordings from the now defunct Concertina & Squeezebox magazine, at the International Concertina Assoc. website.

Thanks must go to Gerry for exposing the not insignificant holes in our 'thorough' testing procedures! We would stick to music if we were any good at it!
